Work From Home in Legal Health Care Consultant Jobs

Obtain Proper Educational Background and Work Setting

According to the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC), registered nurses have several educational options: a two-year associate's degree, a three-year hospital-based diploma program or a four-year bachelor of science degree program. Registered nurses must also pass licensing exams in their state of practice, and keep such licensing updated. Sometimes registered nurses pursue advanced degrees, such as a master's degree or doctorate in nursing or another field.

When beginning their career as a legal health care consultant, nurses don't typically have legal experience. But they can gain the necessary legal education through paralegal or legal nurse consulting programs. They can also learn on the job at law firms.

Have a dedicated work space. Legal health care consultants who decide to work from home should have a space within that home that is used strictly for work. A typical office-like environment is necessary. The AALNC recommends getting equipment such as a computer, printer, fax machine, copy machine, shredder, scanner, business cards and stationery, locked file storage as well as marketing materials that promote the services provided.

The AALNC notes these benefits of having a home office: "Less time and money spent on professional clothing, no time spent on getting to the office for work, less monthly financial obligation and certain tax advantages."

Be able to work independently. Since you are working from home, without the supervision nurses are accustomed to, you need to be motivated to accomplish your day-to-day tasks. The AALNC suggests having a "strong work ethic and willingness to accept responsibility for seeing projects through to their conclusion."

Having good computer skills is also required to perform a legal health care consultant job from home. The AALNC recommends that nurses possess skills in general computer programs, such as Microsoft Excel and Word as well as Adobe Acrobat. The association also suggests nurses become skilled in using the Internet so they can "conduct background searches on defendant health care providers and opposing side’s experts."

Treat your work like a business. The AALNC notes how legal nurse consultants need to perform many "nonbillable" tasks that keep their business running. Among those duties are bookkeeping, marketing, invoicing and collection, as well as building a library and managing employes, according to the AALNC.

The AALNC notes how legal nurse consultants who work for themselves must also fund their own health and liability insurance coverage and manage their own retirement accounts. As owners of their own small business, they won't be paid for sick time or vacation time. They also must handle their own accounting and income taxes.
