What to Do When Your Job Doesn't Offer Maternity Leave Pay

Pregnancy creates joy for many women who want to raise a family. For most women, federal law requires their company to allow them time off when they give birth. Unfortunately, this law does not require companies to provide compensation for these women. Some women receive disability pay to compensate them while they recover after giving birth. However, some companies do not provide compensation for employees on maternity leave.

Vacation Time

One option for receiving income during the woman's time off includes managing her vacation time. Once a worker realizes she's pregnant and needs to take time off, she can review her available vacation time. Vacation time provides compensation when she isn't working. Her current vacation time consists of her total vacation time less any days already used. If she expects the baby's birth to occur the following year and she carries forward unused vacation time, her total vacation time for the following year increases.

Save Ahead

Another option involves planning ahead for her financial needs and saving ahead. The woman needs to estimate the length of time she plans to take off for maternity leave and the amount of income she needs for that time. She then takes her total income need and divides it by the number of pay dates until her due date. She should create a savings account and set aside that amount of money each time she receives her paycheck.

Limited Schedule

Working a limited schedule after the birth of her baby provides some income for the new mother. Some women who experience quick recoveries choose to return to work on a part-time basis within a week after having the baby. This provides a lesser amount of income than working full-time, but still helps alleviate some of the financial stress resulting from being off of work.

Expense Reduction

The women should spend some time reviewing her expenses and determine ways of reducing those expenses. If she chooses to stay home during her maternity leave, she eliminates the expense of commuting to work and the cost of purchasing lunch. Other expenses may be postponed through forbearance until she returns to work, such as student loan payments. General living expenses can also be reduced, such as choosing cheaper grocery items.
