What Is the Job Title in a Cover Letter?

Every detail and consideration counts when it comes to creating the strongest cover letter to accompany your resume. The job title for the position you are seeking plays an important role in the content of your cover letter, and the way in which you include the job title depends on the type of cover letter you are sending.

Specification

For both your cover letter and resume, being specific in stating what you want will likely increase your chances of getting noticed by an employer. In the very least, you should mention the exact job title you are seeking in the introductory paragraph of your cover letter. This letter should be no more than one page long. Employers tend to scan, and you want them to know immediately what job you are interested in when they start your letter.

Customization

Cover letters should always be customized to each job and company, and that goes beyond simply changing the salutation from "Dear Mr. Smith" to "Dear Mr. Jones." While you may be applying for several different yet similar jobs, use the job title the company uses in your cover letter. For example, one cover letter may state you are seeking an "IT systems architect" position, while the next might say "IT system designer."

Online Cover Letters

When you are submitting a cover letter and resume via email or by uploading them to an online database, the job title also plays a role in your subject line. For email, the subject line should immediately let the recipient know what the email is in reference to. For online databases, employers search based on job title, and incorporating the type of job you want into the title is vital in getting noticed. Be as specific as possible in stating the exact job title you are seeking, and if you are submitting via email, use the same job title in the subject line that you did in the cover letter.

Considerations

Read all instructions carefully before applying for any job. If you are applying online or responding to a job advertisement, you may need to include a job code along with the job title in your cover letter. In addition to the job title you are seeking, you should also include the recipient's job title in the inside address of your cover letter. The inside address appears only on hard copy cover letters and is below the header. It should include the recipient's name, job title, company name and company address.
