What Is a Job Screening?

Job screening is the process a hiring manager goes through to identify the best candidate for a position. The first step is acceptance of applications and resumes. The manager or committee then reviews the applications to decide who to invite in for more thorough screening activities.

Screening Tools

Applications and resumes provide the basic background information used for the initial screening. Candidates who meet the basic qualifications are then invited for testing and interviewing. Some employers use pre-interview tests to gauge such things as personality traits, communication style, industry acumen and math skills. The interview is often the most strenuous screening tool. During this phase, the interviewer asks a series of questions and listens to the candidate's responses. After a finalist is identified, hiring managers use tools such as reference checks, background checks and drug tests to validate the quality of the decision.

Screening Objectives

While screening candidates, interviewers want to gauge who matches the job, work-team and company culture the best. A high-quality hire is important to productivity and retention. The urgency to fill a position impacts the length and types of tools used. While a more thorough screening contributes to the best decision, it takes more time. Employers must also provide fair and consistent screening processes to avoid discrimination lawsuits.
