What Are Pre-Employment Physicals?

All employers want to ensure they have healthy employees. Part of the responsibility of the employer is to make sure employees can perform the tasks of the job assigned. As a result, sometimes an employer will require a prospective employee to take a pre-employment physical before extending a job offer to the candidate. Pre-employment medical examinations determine a prospective employee's overall fitness level.

Job

Each job has minimum physical requirements; for example, loading trucks may require a stronger employee than a receptionist job. Employers want employees to be physically capable of performing the full spectrum of duties related to their position. Workers' compensation insurance and employee insurance cost employers a lot of money; employers don't want to see employees get hurt. Pre-employment physicals weed out prospective employees who can't perform the job tasks.

Health

Employers must identify the health of each prospective employee for insurance purposes. Pre-employment physicals expose pre-existing conditions so employers are aware of any health problems that could arise with prospective employees. Employers want to ensure they have a productive and healthy work force to perform the jobs assigned.

Drugs

Employers want to ensure prospective employees do not use illegal drugs. A pre-employment physical entails a battery of tests to make sure an prospective employee is not taking any illegal drug. Some tests are done by taking blood, urine or hair samples in order to test for the use of illegal drugs by the prospective employee.

Psychological

The mental health testing of a prospective employee is also a issue covered during a pre-employment physical. Jobs that place a lot of stress on an employee, such as an air traffic controller, come with a battery of psychological testing to ensure the prospective employee can handle the stress. Law enforcement personnel and firemen are also tested for mental health. These psychological tests prevent the employer from hiring a person that has a mental health condition that could affect job performance.
