What Are the Different Jobs at a Fashion Magazine?

Fashion magazines hire candidates to fill a variety of roles, from writers and editors to coordinators and designers to directors and managers, depending on the size and needs of the company. For example, companies typically employ account managers, but larger organizations may hire senior account managers as well.

Capturing the Essence

Images make or break fashion magazines. It's the first thing people see and it sets the stage for what consumers can expect to find in the issue. Capturing the perfect shots every time is so critical that instead of hiring one photographer, fashion magazines usually contract them on a per-project basis. Inexperienced photographers generally start out by accepting much less pay to get their work published. Once they build a solid portfolio, they can send samples to photo editors or directors of photography at more-established fashion magazines.

Telling the Story

Pictures may take up most of the magazine, but readers lose interest if there's no substance. Fashion magazines employ different types of editors, such as assistants, to oversee a certain subject, and managing editors to run daily operations. The top position is the executive editor, who typically determines what gets published and how it is presented. The editor-in-chief of Lucky Magazine, Eva Chen, noted in "The Huffington Post" that those interested in becoming editors of fashion magazines should get a degree in fashion rather than journalism.

Structuring the Components

With copy and visuals taken care of, it's up to graphic designers to make it all fit and flow. Designers for fashion magazines determine layouts for each spread and add appealing elements or effects to avoid repetition. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that graphic designers typically have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field. According to "Seventeen" magazine, studying graphic design can also lead to opportunities in web design or marketing.

Closing the Deals

To cover the cost of getting a magazine from an idea to an object on the shelves, advertising sales agents or representatives sell ad space -- taking into account the content when they negotiate deals. For example, advertisements displaying fashion merchandise are appropriate throughout the magazine, whereas classified ads are typically saved for the very end. The BLS notes that although some advertising sales agents are hired with a high school diploma, employers tend to prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree and sales experience.
