What Is the Job Description of a School Resource Officer?

A school resource officer is a law enforcement official who has a community-policing role in one or more schools. Although the job involves creating safer environments for children, it is not just about enforcing the law. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, a school resource officer should also serve as a teacher counselor.

Law Enforcement Tasks

SROs take an active role in policing schools, which means dealing with both internal and external crimes. For example, you may have to deal with a student who commits a felony or with a trespasser who enters campus without permission. It isn't usually your job to deal with school conduct or code violations unless there has been a criminal offense. You should be a visible presence in and around a school, helping administrators create a secure and safe environment for students, teachers and the wider community. This may involve everyday tasks such as patrolling the campus and managing traffic at the start and end of the school day. You'll also deal with emergency security situations.

Teaching Tasks

Education is an important part of your job as a school resource officer, particularly in terms of teaching children how to keep themselves safe. You’ll also help them learn about the criminal justice system and the role of police, as well as issues such as the use of alcohol and drugs, safe driving, personal safety and crime prevention. School resource officers educate children in class by giving presentations or run community service projects, special classes or clubs. You also have a responsibility to the school community, so you'll work with staff and parents to help them understand the issues their children may face.

Counseling Tasks

As an SRO, you may also provide counseling to individual students. For example, guidance counselors may ask you to assist in efforts to mediate conflicts between students, according to a report on the website of Johns Hopkins University. In addition, the report says, "parents may seek information from the SRO if they suspect their child may be experimenting with drugs or alcohol." Students might also ask the SRO for advice on issues such as how to deal with traffic tickets.

Education and Experience

Most SRO job candidates currently work in law enforcement or will have done so in the past. Programs are run by various agencies, including police departments and school districts, and each may set its own education and qualification criteria. For example, if police departments run programs, they typically assign officers to schools or ask for volunteers. In this case, you would need to be a serving police or peace officer to get the job. Most employers require you to have a law enforcement license or certification. Some require academy training and previous experience. You should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. An associate or bachelor's degree may be useful in helping you find the right job. Career advancement opportunities depend on your employer. You may have opportunities to move into supervisory or program management roles once you gain some experience.

Skills and Training

As an SRO, you must be a positive role model for the students in your school. You must be able to build a professional rapport with children and adults, combining law enforcement skills with the ability to educate and give guidance. Employers may require you to have SRO certification training before hiring you. Some law enforcement agencies run their own training courses. Others may send officers to training programs sponsored by the NASRO or criminal justice agencies before they start work as SROs.
