Ways to Make Extra Money Without Getting a Second Job

In a weak economy, it seems everyone is looking for a creative way to bring in some extra money. While one solution is to get a second job, those jobs can be hard to come by. Even when they are available, second jobs can interfere with your main source of income and put your career in jeopardy. There are a number of ways to bring in some extra cash without the rigidity of a second job.

Online Auctions

If you have a bunch of unwanted stuff cluttering up your home, you can regain your living space while making some extra money. Start by going through your closets, basement and storage sheds, seeking items you no longer want or need. Then take some quality photographs of those items and post them to your favorite online auction site. You pay only a small listing fee for each item, then a commission when it sells. Depending on how much you have to get rid of, you could bring in hundreds or even thousands of extra dollars.

Overtime Opportunities

You may be able to earn extra money on the job you currently have, without having to seek out additional employment. Ask your boss if there are any overtime opportunities available, or if there are any additional assignments you could volunteer for to earn more money. Even if there are no opportunities available when you ask, your boss will remember your initiative, and that could put you at the top of the list when extra work does become available.

Freelance Opportunities

If you have a particular skill, anything from writing and editing to computer programming and database development, you can earn extra money through freelance opportunities. These jobs can be worked in around your personal and professional commitments. The easiest way to get started is by signing up for several online freelance sites and examining the opportunities available. Concentrate on the kinds of things you do well; playing to your strengths can increase the number of assignments you get and help you make more money.

Temp Assignments

If you have some extra time but do not want to get a second job, consider signing up with temporary employment agencies in your area. A temp job can be an excellent way to bring in some extra money without the commitment of a second job. In many cases you can find temporary jobs in the evenings and on weekends, making it easier to earn extra money without impacting your full-time job.
