Types of Software Jobs

There are few companies in existence today that do not have at least a few employees in positions dedicated to software. From creation to maintenance to management, the opportunity software jobs offer increases as computers and electrical systems continue to infiltrate daily life at an exponential rate. There are more than a few possible career paths available for someone interested in working in this field.

Programmers

Software programmers have intimate knowledge of one or more computing languages that they employ to create and develop software programs. Depending on the size of the software, the programmer may be responsible for the full program or just parts of the coding. Most software programming positions require a bachelor's degree in computer programming. However, a software programmer's breadth of experience can sometimes substitute for an official education.

Graphics

A graphics designer job used to simply be for computer games or websites, designing videos and simulations. However most people have seen the result of a graphics designer's work in theaters as well, with computer animated movies and special effects having risen in popularity. A graphics designer uses software such as photo editors, animation programs and design systems. This job also requires artistic ability alongside software knowledge, and schools such as The Art Institutes offer degrees in graphic design.

Technical Support

As computers and software continues to become more common throughout society, people inevitably discover errors in the programs they use. Technical support is a vital career, as it provides software users with the knowledge and expertise they need to overcome software glitches. Technical support can help get rid of software viruses, teach a person to use a program correctly or fix malfunctioning software. Most companies that develop and sell software have teams of technical support advisers in place to handle customer problems and questions.

Networking

Networking managers focus on the upkeep, usage and maintenance of a series of interlinked computers and programs. This is normally within a business setting, and a network manager can be responsible for the software security, overseeing employee software training and making sure networking resources are not being abused according to company policies (such as employees checking personal email or social sites). A network management position requires certification from programs such as the Cisco Certified Network Association or Microsoft Certified System Engineering.
