Transition Into a New Job

Transitioning into a new job is never easy. You not only have to learn your new role, you have to navigate through office relationships and adapt to an unfamiliar culture --all while working to impress your new boss. Pay attention to a few key details to make the transition easier.

Study the Company Culture

Every company has its own type of culture. As you settle into the first few days of your new job, focus on what is expected of employees and what is considered acceptable behavior. For example, while some companies allow employees who work late to come in at a later time the next day, other companies may expect employees to arrive on time for work no matter how late they stayed the previous day. Take note of the company dress code and what the company considers to be its top priorities. Don't try to change policies when you are still considered new, because you may only draw negative attention.

Create Some Relationships

Make a point to accept lunch invitations and work to cultivate office relationships by actively interacting with your co-workers. As the new person, it's natural to feel like the odd person out at first. Creating relationships will not only help you with your transition, it automatically allows you to immerse yourself in the office culture.

Develop a Routine

If you have been unemployed for a while, you may have trouble getting back into the swing of things when you start going to work on a daily basis. Develop a routine at work and at home to help you get back into a daily rhythm. For example, you may need to force yourself to go to bed earlier to ensure that you get up in the morning. You may also find that routines, such as making a to-do list each morning, will help to increase your overall effectiveness and efficiency.

Keep Your Chin Up

You will no doubt encounter a few obstacles along the way as you learn the ropes and settle in to your new position. Keep up your enthusiasm for the new job to help make the transition go a whole lot smoother. Let your co-workers and boss know that you're a team player who is excited to have this new opportunity and that you are willing to pitch in whenever they need you.
