Job Training Ideas for the Severely Autistic

Persons diagnosed with autism may be affected to varying degrees, some functioning at higher levels than others. The nature of disabilities associated with autism can dramatically affect an individual’s ability to perform any kind of job, especially those that require interaction with other people. Autism causes people to suffer in some developmental areas, while creating extremely high skill development in other areas. Focusing on employment that takes advantage of highly developed skills can be beneficial to those dealing with autism.

Definition

Autism is a developmental disorder of unknown origin. Typical symptoms of this affliction are a noticeable lack of awareness of other peoples’ feelings, and very little or nonexistent social interaction or communication with others. There is also an abnormal preoccupation with the self and in many cases restricted or repetitive behavior. Autism affects everyone differently and can range from a highly functioning person to a severely handicapped person. Due to self-absorption and disinterest in communicating with others, autism creates many employment challenges.

Special Skills

Adults with autism have certain unique skills and do best at jobs that address their strengths. Research says adults with autism have short-term memory limitations, however, they also possess more superior long-term memory than most people. General job or training advice for individuals with autism is difficult, because the level at which they are affected can be dramatically different. Individuals with autism may have unusual talents, such as enhanced attention to detail and high performance of very repetitive tasks. They also tend to be visual thinkers. Additionally, some autistic individuals find singing is easier than speaking.

Current Jobs

Autistic people are productively employed in many businesses, nonprofit organizations and other entities. Various organizations exist to help individuals with autism find employment at such large companies as TJ Maxx, Home Depot and Shoppers Food Warehouse. For people with autism who are challenged with nonverbal or poor verbal skills, some jobs suited to them are factory assembly work, janitor jobs, restocking shelves at stores and sorting jobs in a warehouse. Because these individuals have such well-developed long-term memories, working to re-shelve library books can be a good job since they have the capability to memorize the entire numbering system and shelf locations of the books.

Job-Training Assistance

Most states have agencies and organizations that can be useful in the search for training and employment opportunities for autistic people. Each state has a Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, which is an agency set up to assist the public with disabilities and obtaining employment. The government websites contain contact information for these agencies. Awareness of autism is growing and some organizations, like Aspiritech.org, provide training to individuals with autism for specific jobs that take advantage of their unique skills, such as software testing. Additionally, the Easter Seals organization offers job training for autistic adults, and Jobs4Autism.org has job listings and employment stories shared by working individuals with autism. There are other private, regional non-profit organizations whose mission is to provide job training and assistance to autistic and other disabled individuals, such as The Arc San Francisco in San Francisco, CA, and Chesapeake Service Systems, Inc., which serves clients from Virginia to North Carolina (see Resources).
