Tips on Dress for a Job Interview

How you look and dress can give you an edge on the competition during a job interview. Image and self-presentation are important aspects during the hiring process. Take time to carefully prepare for your interview by doing extensive research on the company. Later, strategically choose exactly what you'll wear and know why you're wearing it.

Do Your Research

Just as you would dig into the company's background before a job interview, research what people wear to work. View websites to investigate its corporate image, ask a contact within the company what she commonly wears, drive by the location and see employees trickle out or pay a visit before the interview. Of course, driving by a location may be a bit much, especially if you are caught, so be sure to have a strategy.

Going through all this trouble to find out the company's wardrobe norm may be worth it in the end. As we all know, first impression counts. By mimicking the company's attire, you'll trigger a sense of familiarity. According to MSNBC, the objective is to fit into the company culture at first glance.

However, not all of us can do such hands-on extensive research on a company. Sometimes, job interviews occur hundreds of miles away and within hours right after a plane flight. Try to research with whatever you can get your hands on.

Job Interview Fashion

When it comes to job interview fashion, every detail matters. A polished look is vital.

Be aware of the basic fashion no-no's during a job interview. Don't show too much skin, especially cleavage, and avoid sleeveless dresses and tops. Dresses and skirts should be close to knee length or longer. Always wear closed-toe shoes. Simplicity is key, and being overly trendy could be your downfall.

Various options exist when it comes to women and interview attire. If you do choose to wear a sleeveless dress or top, make sure to wear a classic cardigan over it. Neutrals are highly encouraged.

A power suit is also appropriate, especially when interviewing for a high-profile corporate job. A power suit includes a blazer, sometimes a vest, and either a knee-length pencil skirt or well-tailored pants. Look for neutral colors, such as black, gray or navy. Always make sure that clothes are pressed and wrinkle-free before a job interview.

Keep accessories to a minimum. Utilize classics like diamond or cubic zirconium studs. A pearl necklace or pearl earrings are other classic options. Consider sporting eyeglasses. Some studies show that females who wear eyeglasses have a higher chance at being deemed smarter, according to Sciencemag.org. Use a purse that looks like a briefcase for a professional edge. Wear pumps or dressy flats in a gray or black. Shine and polish your shoes.
