Get a Job as a Sorority Consultant

Sorority consultants were originally referred to as "traveling secretaries" when the position began in 1938. The name was derived from the job description requiring recent sorority graduates to travel to various chapters to promote, recruit and facilitate sorority development. At the time of publication, consultants are called "leadership consultants" working on graduate degrees and traveling to various chapters from August through April. This is a full-time position with applications due in the winter or spring. Most sororities require applicants to be existing seniors in good standing with the sorority.

Become a well-respected senior in your sorority chapter. Maintain good grades and assist in all aspects of recruiting, charity work and chapter leadership in your chapter. Becoming a chapter president, organizing annual fundraisers or coordinating fall pledge recruiting are ways to demonstrate leadership.

Talk to your chapter leaders, existing leadership consultant and house mother about your intentions to become a sorority leadership consultant. Find out what your sorority seeks in leadership consultants, what qualifications make you an attractive prospect and what areas you can improve on to increase your chances.

Obtain the application in the fall semester of your senior year. Note the application deadline and make sure you submit it in time. Deadlines are in December or January for most sororities.

Complete the application, which will include employment history, academic achievements, special awards and leadership experiences. You will also need to supply a personal essay about why you want to be and should be considered for the leadership consultant position. Each sorority uses different topics and essay lengths, so be sure to read the essay details before writing it.

Provide a minimum number of recommendations, often three to four, as indicated in the application. Select a variety of recommendation sources including previous employers, academic advisers, sorority advisers or close friends.

Sign and submit the application before the deadline. Mail your application well in advance to make deadlines or to resend if it gets lost in the mail -- keep a copy for your files. Send the item via certified mail so you have a record when the application was received and by whom. If your application isn't received within a few days of the anticipated arrival date, resend the package.
