A Slot Technician's Job Description

Slot technicians are experts at working slot machines. While patrons collect their winnings, a slot technician assures that machines are running smoothly. Slot technicians not only work well with machines but must have strong people skills. According to the Occupational Information Network, a slot technicians is also commonly known as a slot key person.

Responsibilities

According to the Occupational Information Network, a slot technician has various duties. A technician verifies and pays off jackpots to casino patrons. After a slot machine completes a payoff, slot technicians reset slot machines and refill machines with money or tickets. When a machine malfunctions, technicians conduct minor repairs or adjustments. When major repairs are necessary, slot technicians may remove the machine from the floor. These workers also enforce safety rules and report any hazards.

Environment and Hours

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, slot technicians are found in casinos that are open around the clock. Slot key technicians are expected to work evenings, weekends and holidays. The atmosphere exposes workers to second-hand smoking from cigarettes, cigars and pipes. Slot key technicians can protect their ears from noise by wearing protective headgear, particularly in places where money is counted by loud machinery.

Education and Training

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, slot technicians do not have any formal educational requirements. However, completing slot technician training can be helpful. Slot technicians typically learn-on-the-job. During the first several weeks of employment, these workers receive on-the-job training.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, slot key persons earned a national mean hourly wage of $13.73 and a national mean annual wage of $28,560. The industries that employed the highest number of slot key persons were the local government with a mean annual wage of $28,580; traveler accommodation, $28,460; gambling industries, $28,580; amusement and recreation industries, $29,240; and spectator sports, $25,900.

Outlook

According to the National Employment Matrix from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for slot key persons is expected to increase at a rate of 3 percent through 2018. The employment growth is slower than average due to the advancement of slot machine technology, such as “ticket-in, ticket-out machines”, also known as coinless slot machines.
