Senior Management Job Description

Senior managers are among the highest paid workers in their organizations and typically work in spacious and luxurious offices with a team of support staff. Most managers spend considerable time traveling among their company's international and domestic offices to meet with staff and monitor business operations. Frequent job relocation among company offices is common for those seeking to advance to an executive management position.

Function

Senior managers envision their company's future and implement plans, strategies and policies to guide and direct their employees to achieve it. They supervise and coordinate their organization's operations and make sure employees have the resources needed to do their jobs. Senior managers set the annual company budget and oversee expenses throughout the year to maintain its boundaries. Another important function is establishing organizational compliance and control standards to ensure company staff follow ethical business practices. In addition, senior managers build their company's image by interacting with community organizations, customers, government officials and employees.

Skills

Senior managers need the leadership skills of integrity, strategic planning, decisiveness, sound business judgment, flexibility, analytical thinking and people management. Financial planning, effective resource management and excellent written and verbal communication skills are also important. Experience in international management or economies and knowledge of several languages are beneficial in today's global business environment.

Education and Certification

Most senior managers hold a bachelor's or master's degree in business administration, liberal arts, business management or in a specialized field corresponding to their industry. In the retail trade or transportation industry, it is possible for a manager to achieve that position without a college degree through successful managerial experience. Senior managers continually educate themselves on new management trends by participating in executive development training programs. Certification is available from the Institute of Certified Professional Managers by completing their Certified Manager training program and passing the exam.

Salary

PayScale.com reports the median annual salary of a senior manager is $131,000, as of June 2010. Individual salary will vary depending on a manager's industry, location, educational level and experience.

Job Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects little or no growth in senior management job opportunities through 2018. Increases are expected, however, in the expanding health care and education industries. Many management positions will be lost as companies merge and eliminate duplicate personnel. Experienced managers with strong leadership qualities and proven business success will find the best job opportunities.
