Senior Java Developer Job Description

A senior Java developer is responsible for developing applications using the Java programming language. A developer in this position is also responsible for overseeing the execution of software development from the conceptual phase to the testing phase. Because this is a senior level position, he may also be responsible for mentoring junior developers as well as working with customers and handling research groups.

Java Overview

Java is a high-level object-oriented programming language that takes many cues from other languages such as C and C++. Those who have experience with the C language will recognize Java syntax. Job Description

A senior Java developer is a high-level computer programmer. A person in this job analyzes, designs and builds Java-based applications for Web and Internet environments. The process of building Java-based applications includes creating application layers, modeling techniques, designing object-oriented components and coding algorithms. Senior Java developers may work on existing applications or create new ones. Although this is a supervisory position, some Java developers may still perform hands-on coding.

Educational Background

Most companies hiring senior Java developers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, math or other related fields. Work experience and technical training may replace the college degree requirement. For a senior-level developer, at least five years experience managing Java application development--including design, maintenance and delivery--is highly desirable. Employers hiring for this position may also require several years working in a team environment as a programmer. Because most Java applications are implemented on the Web, experience in Web architecture and design is a positive.

Compensation

The median annual salary for a senior Java developer in the United States is $95,143, according to Salary.com The lower end compensation for this career is $84,945. The higher-end compensation is $111,824. Salaries depend on employer size, industry, employee credentials and years of experience.

Outlook

Senior Java development is a subset of computer programming. The outlook for computer programmers is expected to decline, although slowly. Employment in the field will decrease four percent from 2006 to 2016, according to careers.org. Outsourcing for programming jobs will contribute to this decline. Those with a bachelor's degree or higher and experience in various programming languages will have an easier time finding jobs and advancing on the career ladder.
