Senior Designer Job Description

Senior designers draw on their experiences as designers to lead visual design teams that create images and layouts for projects for advertising, websites and magazines. According to the Indeed job site, senior designers earn an average of $90,000 as of 2015.

Types of Senior Designers

Senior graphic designers focus on developing images and layouts for different types of publications, including magazines, newspapers and ads. A senior web designer creates the look and layout of websites while managing technological issues like performance and bandwidth for the site. Senior interior designers develop indoor environments for residential and business construction or renovation programs, producing ideas and layouts that create a specific look and feel. For advertising agencies, senior designers create motifs and ideas for branding and advertising campaigns. In the video game industry,senior designers create games.

Senior Designer Duties

Senior designer duties involve training, monitoring and providing feedback for junior designers and other members involved with design projects. They collaborate with bosses and clients to learn the goals of the project before making decisions on the design details. They may also manage client accounts, create project schedules and manage budgets.

Senior designers generally specialize in developing visual images for their clients and employers. Completing a project often requires teamwork with other designers, copywriters or other stakeholders. A lot of senior designer work is accomplished on computers with design and imaging software.

A great sense of aesthetics and a great understanding of how to implement design principles when creating visual images and layouts are musts for senior designers. Familiarity with design trends and industry standards ensures that designs stay fresh and modern. Terrific communication skills help uncover clients' needs and help to interact with the project team. Most senior designers acquire a college degree in a design related field. Employers tend to seek senior designers who have with five years or more of experience in the field.

The demand in employment for designers depends on the area of design. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for graphic designers is expected to grow 7 percent between 2012 and 2022, while employment for Web designers is projected to increase by 20 percent. Graphic designers in the computer systems design field are expected to see growth by 35 percent while design for books, newspapers and magazines is projected to decline by 16 percent. The average expected growth for all occupations between 2012 and 2022 is 11 percent.
