Send a Resume for a Job

Most professional jobs require that a prospective employee send in a resume that outlines his previous work experience, education and skills, as well as any additional qualifications for the position. Making your resume stand out is a trick that many job seekers attempt but which few succeed at. When sending out your resume, you should give thought both to the content of the resume and to the method that you use to send it.

Send hard copies to positions you really care about. Unless you're only applying to a small number of positions or a prospective employer demands it, it's generally not worth the money to send out a hard copy of you resume. Make sure to print the resume on high-quality white or buff colored paper, not colored. If you can afford it, send the resume out in 9-inch by 12-inch envelopes so that you don't have to fold the paper.

Send your resume by email when applying for less-important positions. When attaching the resume to the email, it's generally good form to send the document in two different formats: in Microsoft Word and in PDF. Many employers, however, will request that you send your resume in a specific format, such as in a text file or copied into the body of an email.

Post your resume on job-search sites. Instead of sending your resume to employers, it's often helpful to post your resume in a place where employers can see it, such as on a jobs website like Monster.com. There's little downside to placing your resume on a number of different websites. Be sure to update the resume so that it stays current and so employers know that you're still in the market for a job.

Follow up. After you've applied for a position, particularly one that you feel you are well qualified for, it's not inappropriate to follow up. The follow-up shouldn't happen less than three days after you've sent the resume and not more than week. Generally, you should send a follow-up email rather than make a phone call, as this is less intrusive. However, if you've already spoken with the person hiring for the position, a quick message is acceptable.
