Pros & Cons of Job Placement & Staffing Agencies

Job placement and staffing agencies work as middle men for businesses, hiring staff members as a service. Often these agencies contract people to work on a temporary basis, filling in for employees who are away from the office for an extended period of time; in some instances they place workers in indefinite positions. In some ways, these agencies are beneficial for those who need immediate work, but in other ways may not be the best option if you are a company looking for well-trained staff.

Flexibility

The biggest draw of job placement and staffing agencies is flexibility for both the employer and employee. Many temporary positions have the potential to turn into full-time jobs, and this arrangement allows the employer to evaluate the new worker without having to completely commit to the relationship. Even if the job is temporary, many companies request the same temp if they enjoy his services, according to Business Know-How. These temporary arrangements are also beneficial to the employee who enjoys a flexible schedule. Rather than be locked into a normal work week, a temp employee can pick and choose assignments at her discretion.

No Search

Since staffing agencies do all the legwork when it comes to connecting employers and employees. If you are looking for work, this service reduces your legwork tremendously as job placement agencies keep an active database of available jobs. Meanwhile, this service is beneficial for employers since they do not have to go through an employee search and the hiring process.

Time Frame

Jobs may become available at the last minute if someone gets sick or has a family emergency. This may put an employee in a difficult situation if he has a prior commitment and either has to back out or pass up an opportunity to earn income.

Training

One con for businesses is that every time a new temp employee is brought aboard, there has to be some degree of training involved before he is ready to start work---even if it's just answering the telephone and taking messages. Some jobs can actually be quite dangerous, such as working with heavy machinery. If the agency assigns an unskilled worker, the employer must train him to safely work in the new environment. However, this training may be condensed or rushed to save time and could result in a dangerous situation for the new employee and other workers.
