Principle Electrical Engineer Job Description

A principle electrical engineer is a highly-skill engineering professional who designs and directs large-scale electrical engineering projects. These professionals act as a hands-on technical manager to ensure one or several engineering projects are completed successfully in a required time frame, as well provide documentation of the project.

Education/Qualifications

Educational requirements include a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Employment opportunities may increase for those who obtain the Professional Engineer license through the National Society of Professional Engineers, which is a highly-recognized credential in the engineering discipline. Most employers require at least 10 years of increasing experience and responsibility as an engineer, with extensive design and project management experience.

Management

These professionals manage electrical engineering projects from conception to completion. This involves working with other departments within an organization such as purchasing, sales, marketing and manufacturing to ensure the electrical product or equipment is completed in accordance to the organization's quality standards in a timely and cost-effective manner. This includes overseeing project budgets and delegating responsibilities to the technical staff involved with the project.

Design

These professionals are hands-on managers, and assist in the technical responsibilities of electrical engineering projects. This includes design, development, testing and manufacturing of electrical equipment or products. Along with design, a principle electrical engineer provides documentation throughout the project to develop policies, procedures and instructions for use of the equipment or products.

Industries

A principle electrical engineer can work in a variety of industries such as manufacturing, utility services, research and development, as well as information technology. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects growth in service-providing industries such as consulting services who provide engineering expertise for businesses. Most of these employers hire principle or lead electrical engineers to oversee and direct complicated electrical engineering projects.

Salary

The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects only two percent growth for electrical engineers between 2008 and 2018. Slow growth is expected due to international competition and these services being performed by other countries. Indeed.com lists a national average salary of $88,000 per year for a principle electrical engineer in April 2010.
