Get a Job in Malaysia

Getting a job in Malaysia can be challenging, especially if you are a foreigner with dreams of working abroad in this nation either physically or remotely. However, there are ways to become employed in certain fields, including technology, education and medicine. Steps toward reaching a goal include getting hired with the right company, gaining access to a work visa, or perhaps even taking a bigger step in life by starting a family in Malaysia.

Complete a resume showcasing your skill set for the particular job you are hoping to obtain. Use a website such as Transitions Abroad for coaching on how to make your resume acceptable internationally (see Resources).

Search for an opening in your field on Malaysian employment websites (see Resources). If you are an educator, you can go through various organizations specializing in relocating teachers to Malaysia, such as Teach Abroad, which focuses on educator relocations.

Research the area of Malaysia you would be living in and draw up a budget to ensure your move is realistic. Complete your phone or online interviews that have been scheduled with any potential employers.

Apply for a work visa. This can usually be done by taking confirmation of employment to the Malaysian embassy closest to where you live. Research the Malaysia My Second Home program for a more long-term solution (see Resources). This allows overseas employees to sometimes stay in the country for up to 10 years, and is renewable.

Resign from your current job if necessary, and obtain plane tickets, housing, and any other necessary details. Network with future co-workers and others you may know who have been to Malaysia to gather tips and advice for your big move.
