The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that career opportunities in the recreation industry are on the rise and will increase 15 percent by 2018. The government does acknowledge that about 40 percent of recreation employees will work less than 40 hours per week, but this makes it an excellent career opportunity for those seeking higher education, an additional income or seasonal employment. A career in the recreation industry includes planning, organizing and directing recreational activities in such areas as education, tourism, sports leagues, and senior-related places, such as nursing homes.

Seasonal Recreation Workers

Recreation workers often work seasonally and are typically hired by residential or day camps. Tourism companies also hire them to provide childcare services and activities at resorts or on cruise ships. Recreation workers are responsible for providing recreational activities and supervision. Activities can range from outdoor activities, such as swimming, to the instruction of specific skills, such as computing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that recreational workers make between minimum wage and $11 per hour.

Recreational Leaders

Recreational leaders oversee the day-to-day activities involved in recreation programs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, a recreational leader's salary averages around $21,960 for full-time employment. They maintain the equipment used, and ensure that the equipment is used properly. Recreational leaders also supervise the recreation workers. They are sometime specialists in a specific recreational activity. For example, a recreational leader may have been a former golf professional who now is a golf instructor.

Recreation Supervisors

Recreation supervisors are responsible for the daily operations, planning and organization of recreational activities. Salary.com estimates a recreation supervisor's salary to be $40,000 to $60,000 a year, depending on his location. Recreation supervisors are responsible for the supervision and oversight of recreational staff. They plan staffing, organize events and manage recreational activities planned by the recreational director.

Directors of Recreation

Directors of recreation plan, develop and manage recreation programs. Salary.com estimates salaries for recreational directors to be $74,000 to $145,000 a year depending, on their location. Directors of recreation often work for federal, state and local commissions to administer parks and recreation budgets. Those seeking to become directors of recreation need a number of years of industry-related experience and a college degree. Many universities and colleges offer degree programs, such as the recreation leadership management degree and bachelor's degree in recreation leadership management programs at Ferris University in Michigan.
