List of Outdoor Careers

Working in the great outdoors can be a nice change from a stuffy office; it puts you in direct contact with people and the weather. A list of outdoor careers includes work in natural surroundings, cities and constantly changing locations. Outdoor workers choose between self-employment and salaried work for established companies. To improve your chances of securing outdoor work, gain qualifications by taking courses available from universities, local colleges and by distance learning via the Internet.

Forest Ranger

Forest Rangers work outdoors under state or federal government agencies in 400 locations across the nation. These include positions as diverse as isolated fire-watching stations in vulnerable forests, to guides for tourists in busy and popular areas such as Yellowstone National Park. Duties include informing visitors of park regulations and helping preserve endangered plants and animals. There is also patrol work, including joining in search and rescue efforts on land, in the air or by boat. Good communications skills are useful for dealing with the public; some states may require applicants to pass a fitness test. Accepting seasonal and volunteer positions at parks can lead to full-time job offers.

Photojournalist

A photojournalist works outside (and sometimes inside) at a different place each day, covering news events at home and abroad for newspapers or magazines, or chooses freelance work, selling photos to a news agency such as Reuters or The Associated Press. As the U.S. government careers advisory service noted, "Improvements in digital technology reduce barriers of entry into this profession," meaning newcomers are taking advantage of falling prices on equipment to join the profession. Competition will be strong for top jobs, but there is always a place for new talent with a unique eye. Qualifications needed include good technical skills in using a variety of cameras and lenses, skill in digitally editing images using programs such as Photoshop and an eye for what makes a newsworthy photo. Formal qualifications can be an asset when applying for jobs, but well designed portfolio of work will also be of benefit. A degree of physical fitness is required to be quick on the feet to catch the action, find the best position for a required shot and avoiding getting caught up in events like demonstrations.

Construction Work

Construction work offers a large variety of outdoor jobs, from specialist work like bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, roofing and operating heavy machinery, to general laboring work like erecting scaffolding, cleaning and maintaining equipment and carrying building materials.

Requirements for construction workers include physical strength, good balance and the ability to work as part of a team. Career advancement opportunities include supervisory positions and self-employment as a subcontractor who runs his own company and bids for contracts. Training for specific construction jobs includes on-the-job, apprentice positions and community college courses in the relevant subjects.
