Leave a Job

Deciding to leave a job is a big decision. Whether leaving to go to a competitor or leaving the workplace entirely, there is a proper way to quit. Burning bridges is never a good idea, so no matter what, keep a level head and stay professional.

Give a 2-week notice; that's the general standard. Ensure that it is done in writing, so that it is legally documented.

Turn in a letter of resignation, a professional letter informing the company of your decision to leave. It should include the effective date, a general reason for leaving and the plan for the remaining 2 weeks on the job. It should be addressed to management and signed.

Prepare for the worst. Have enough money saved up that if employment is terminated immediately, bills can be paid. Also, it's common for guilt trips to be used, so prepare emotionally as well.

Wrap up current projects. If that's not possible before the quit date, at least get to a good stopping point where someone else can take over easily.

Hand over responsibilities. Train a replacement if possible. Make the transition as easy as possible for the company. Any contacts or customers should be informed of who to speak to after the quit date. Leave everything in order so that the next person can easily take over duties and responsibilities.

Return company property. Return project notes and any other office supplies used. Take personal belongings home, and leave any business property at the office.
