Jobs in Human Services With a Master's Degree

Human service careers encompass all the different types of professional opportunities directly related to helping out humans. This generalized field includes master's degrees in social work, psychology, counseling and human services. Job opportunities in this field are expected to increase in the near future as the service needs of the population continue to expand.

Social Work Careers

A Master of Social Work degree is one of the most common degrees in the human services field. Social workers have many career opportunities and areas of specialization. Some work with children as advocates or case managers, others assist families and provide therapeutic counseling. Social workers often assist with program administration and supervision of support staff in various medical or community settings. There are also jobs available within the correctional system, at police departments, public schools or community centers.

Supervisory Careers

Any type of human services master's degree is applicable toward a supervisory job. Residential settings such as group homes, assisted living facilities or community support agencies require staff supervision. Generally speaking, an employee with a master's degree would be in charge of support staff, case managers, skill development specialists, aides and administrators. Program management, grant writing, community outreach and other tasks may be included in the human services supervisory role and can vary on a daily basis.

Psychology Careers

A master's degree in psychology is another example of a human services program degree and can lead to various types of employment. Most clinical psychologists do hold doctoral degrees, but a master's degree in this profession can be utilized at community colleges for teaching or as a research assistant. Other types of psychology careers include working as a therapist in the filed of mental health or at a correctional facility. Organizational psychologists work in companies to assist with worker productivity and to tackle problems within the workplace.

Counseling Careers

The term "counselor" refers to any of the generalized direct support professionals that assist individuals in resolving their problems. A master's degree in a human services field can be applicable toward counseling, especially if other coursework is completed in the area of interest. Counselors assist those with substance abuse issues, mental health needs, geriatric concerns or families and children. Other types of counseling opportunities include working as an educational, career or school counselor providing vocational guidance and encouragement.
