Interview Tips for a Government Accounting Job

A career in government accounting requires the maintenance and examination of account records for city, state, or federal government agencies, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although interviewing for a government accounting job is similar to interviewing with other companies, you'll benefit from preparing ahead of time. The better you present yourself during the interview, the higher your chances will be of getting the job.

Research the Job

Research the government agency before the job interview. Learn about the accounting position and the entire agency, too. You may be asked questions during the interview that relate to what the agency does. Preparedness will help you answer these questions honestly. According to Derrick Dortch of the Washington Post, government hiring managers expect you to know about what the government agency does before you reach the interview.

Dress Well

Present your best self during the interview. Dress as you would if you were working in this career. Wear clean, pressed clothes. Suits or dress slacks work well for government accounting interviews for men and women alike. If you have a pet that sheds, bring a lint roller with you so you can remove pet hair just before entering the government building.

Smile and Sit Up Straight

Be positive during your interview. Use good posture to show that you are alert. Hiring managers evaluate not only your answers to questions but your body language, as well. Smile throughout the interview to present a friendly attitude.

Keep Answers Brief

Keep answers to interview questions brief. Try to answer the question effectively between one and three minutes. If you notice the interviewer starting to get bored or her eyes wandering, wrap up the answer and move on. Limit stories or examples to just one or two anecdotes per answer.

Show Your Passion

You might be asked why you're applying for a government accounting position during the interview. The hiring manager is specifically wondering why you want to work for the government. Show your passion for politics and your need to help people in your answer.

Mention Accounting Experience

Mention your accounting experience throughout the interview. Even if you're asked a seemingly personal question, such as "Tell me about yourself," keep the answer related to accounting. Tell short stories and anecdotes that can help you illustrate your answer. Avoid talking about your personal life as this isn't essential and may lessen your chance of getting the job.
