Interview for a Copywriting Job

When evaluating potential copywriters, employers consider not only writing ability but also people skills and working styles. This is because copywriters work as part of a team that might include photographers, graphic designers, advertising directors and other creative professionals. Whether you’re interviewing for a freelance or staff position, prepare to discuss your previous work in depth and demonstrate that you work well with others.

Research the Culture

Find out as much as you can about the work environment before the interview. Some creative organizations have a less formal atmosphere than other industries. They may not wear traditional business attire in the office -- and may not expect you to for an interview. Browse the company’s website, conduct an online search of news articles pertaining to the organization or speak to someone who works there. Ask people in your professional network whether they know a current or former employee, or search social networking sites professionals connected to the company.

Showcase Your Portfolio

Employers may seek candidates with specific degrees or work experience, but equally important is your skill and versatility as a writer. You’ll need a professional, comprehensive portfolio of work to prove to employers that you have what they’re looking for. Showcase writing samples of the type of work you want to create and the kind the agency specializes in. Ensure that your portfolio is up-to-date and prepare to answer questions about it. For example, employers may ask which piece you’re most proud of and which piece was most challenging to create.

Emphasize Interpersonal Skills

Copywriters work closely with other members of the creative team, so employers will want to know how you interact with others. Describe examples that demonstrate your collaborative skills. For example, note that at your last job you frequently sat in on conference calls with the client, or that you worked alongside the creative director, graphic designer and other team members to develop creative concepts. Discuss how much you enjoyed the camaraderie and the productivity that stemmed from collaboration.

Highlight Other Skills

Even though you’ll be working as a copywriter, some employers will be impressed if you show them that you’re proficient in other aspects of producing a campaign or piece. For example, mention that you have extensive experience with photo editing software. A successful ad campaign or branding strategy requires appealing to popular taste, so be prepared to talk about music, film and art.
