Internet Consultant Job Description

The primary duty and responsibility of an Internet consultant is to provide technical knowledge and expertise to clients in areas of Web development, marketing and advertising. Many Internet consultants are also Web designers and authors who work out of a small office or a home-based business environment. The hours can be long for an Internet consultant, sometimes extending past the traditional 40-hour work week to finish Web development projects that have deadlines.

Categorizes and Develops Websites

An Internet consultant works with clients to determine the categorization of websites. Internet consultants use online and offline tools to examine the various type of competitor websites that may be similar in concept. Internet consultants assign designations to websites (informational or e-commerce) based on research and studies pertaining to Web development. Consultants must also have knowledge of Web development software and programming skills to develop websites for clients.

Internet Design, Branding and Content

Internet consultants suggest designs based on the type of business or organization to be featured on the Internet. Consultants must have knowledge of design software (from Photoshop to Microsoft FrontPage) used in the design-making process. Consultants also assist clients to brand their websites, establish trademarks and copyrights, and review written content for Web pages. Design can include matching color schemes, implementation of a back-end e-commerce system or SQL (Standard Query Language) databases for knowledge-base websites.

Creates Marketing Strategies

Internet consultants must be able to create Web-based marketing strategies. Consultants conduct market research using various competitor websites and marketing software (which rates website traffic and "hits"), and develop keywords for website optimization. Target market strategies are also developed with a plan to reach customers through niche marketing, which includes the use of social networking portals and various on-demand information programs. The Internet consultant must have technical skills to implement strategic inquiries associated with website development.

Creates Advertising Campaigns

Advertising campaigns are created for business visibility on the Internet. The Internet consultant must have knowledge of various ways to advertise a client's website by using SEO (Search Engine Optimization), affiliate links, direct links, management of blogs and appropriate keywords for higher search engine rankings. Consultants must know how to implement pay-per-click and other advertising programs.

Education and Experience

An industry certification or a Bachelor's degree in Web Development or Marketing is usually the standard requirement for a position as an Internet consultant. Most Internet consultants are contractors and self employed. Internet consultants working for a company are usually paid by salary. According to a survey listed at Payscale.com, effective May 2010, the average median salary of an information systems consultant with five to nine years of experience (Internet consultants are classified as IS consultants) is between $62,333 and $90,648.
