Interest Inventories for Careers

Interest inventories allow job seekers or those seeking a change in career to explore their interests and passions to find a satisfying career. A position that coordinates with interests can provide the worker with job satisfaction, improved morale, lower stress and reduced absenteeism. A great deal of time is spent in the workplace, which can be more enjoyable in a career that matches worker interests.

Uses for Interest Inventories

Workers and students may use interest inventories to help provide guidance when selecting a career path. Students in high school or college may use a career inventory to choose a major or degree program. Employers can use interest inventories to help match job applicants to available positions. The inventory can allow the employer to find positions for applicants that will result in a better employer and employee relationship.

Types of Inventories

Interest inventories can measure the individual's abilities to find a career path in which he will excel. An interest inventory that identifies abilities can help the worker discover his talents and skills. Inventories also help the individual identify his skills by matching leisure time interests with employable skills. An employability skills inventory assessment can help identify weaknesses as well as strengths. Understanding weaknesses can help the worker find the areas that need development.

Benefits of Interest Inventories

When a company uses an interest inventory to match workers with positions in the company the result may be greater job satisfaction for the employee. Employees who are satisfied in their positions are more likely to stay with the company, resulting in a reduction of employee turnover. This reduces recruitment, hiring and training costs for the company. Workers who use interest inventories may pursue a career that provides satisfaction and fulfillment. When a worker feels fulfillment in his career, he may excel and pursue advancement opportunities as well.

Considerations

Online interest inventories do not have professional counselors or interpreters to help the student or worker understand the results. A misinterpretation of the results may cause a missed opportunity for the student or employee.
