Independent Consultant Job Description

Independent consultants review and analyze business operations and procedures. They make recommendations and provide reports on how to increase profits, efficiency and other operations that will help a business increase its overall performance. Consultants provide a wide ranging variety of services that can also include environmental consulting for home owners and businesses and other specialty consulting within business organizations such as human resource management and management approach analysis.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Independent consultants help plan, evaluate and implement business and personal projects. They monitor and review market trends and changes to determine business opportunity and direction. They provide solutions to exceptional problems arising within organizations. They communicate with employees and managers to determine the most effective approach to projects and organizational structure and work with businesses and their clients to maximize efficiency and performance.

Education Requirements

Consultants are usually called upon by businesses and individuals as a result of their experience and education in the field. According to educationportal.com, most independent consultants hold a bachelor's degree or a master's degree, and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor almost 73 percent of workers in this field have a bachelor's or higher degree. An exceptional amount of experience in the field that a consultant is working is extremely valuable and usually necessary for a successful career in this line of work.

Other Preferable Skills

Independent consultants must have exceptional problem-solving skills. They are often required to compile reports and presentations that necessitate good computer skills. The ability to multi-task, prioritize and communicate effectively are very important in this field.

According to the BLS, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this industry is projected to be the fastest growing in the nation, with employment increasing 83 percent from 2008--18. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that all consulting fields should experience strong growth.

According to the BLS, average median hourly wages vary widely in this field and range from $62.69- $11.64. The average weekly income of consultants was $913 in 2008.
