The Highest-Paid Self-Employment Jobs in the U.S.

Some of largest self-employed occupations are also among the highest-paid. Economic Modeling Specialists International reported in August 2012 that heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers were one of the largest self-employed careers, with 227,534 drivers earning a median hourly wage of $17.28. A smaller group -- accountants and auditors -- were still among the 20 largest occupations. According to EMSI, 115,992 accountants and auditors were employed in 2012, making a median hourly rate of $26.05.

Medical Assistance

Doctors are among the highest-paid professionals in the country, but the average salary greatly varies depending on their type of practice. According to Medscape's 2013 Physician Compensation Report, those in a solo practice earned an average of $216,000 per year, while doctors in a private practice with a partner averaged $311,000 annually. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment opportunities for physicians and surgeons to increase 18 percent between 2012 and 2022, which is faster than the average of all occupations.

Legal Advice

Lawyers made the top 20 largest self-employed occupations list, and they have the potential to make just as much as doctors. According to the BLS, about 22 percent of lawyers were self-employed in 2012. It notes that those working in offices of physicians earned the most, bringing home an average of $235,000 per year, as of May 2013. The BLS projects opportunities for lawyers will grow 10 percent between 2012 and 2022, which is slower than the average of all occupations.

Operations Analysis

The BLS reports that about 21 percent of management analysts were self-employed in 2012. It notes that those working in the personal care services industry were paid the most, with average annual wages amounting to more than $187,199, as of May 2013. According to the BLS, employment opportunities should increase 19 percent between 2012 and 2022. It expects demand to be mostly for analysts who specialize in trending areas, such as implementing "green" actions and lowering energy consumption.

Dental Hygiene

Many dentists run their own businesses or start a private practice with a group of partners and hire assistants and staff members. According to the BLS, general dentists who work in private offices made a mean income of $167,370 per year, as of May 2013. The BLS projects that employment opportunities will grow 16 percent between 2012 and 2022. It expects there to be little or no competition for jobs.
