High Paying Writing Careers

Few writers go into the profession to get rich. Still, you can earn good pay as a writer, particularly if you seek work in the entertainment industry or with the federal government. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that all U.S. writers and authors earned a mean annual salary of $69,250 and a mean hourly wage of $33.30 as of May 2013.

Movie and Video Industries

Writers employed in the movie and video industries earned a mean annual salary of $106,160 and a mean hourly rate of $51.04 as of May 2013, according to the BLS. It's important to know that actual writing jobs might not be full-time, and employment can be subject to "feast or famine" conditions as determined by available assignments. Writers employed in the movie and video industries might also experience work stoppages associated with labor disputes. Writing jobs in the movie and video sectors are highly sought after, with only 3,550 jobs reported nationwide in 2013.

Independent Writers

Writers listed under the job category of "Independent Artists, Writers and Performers" ranked second in pay at a mean annual income of $94,080 and a mean hourly wage of $45.23. This group includes self-employed writers that range from novelists and screenwriters to lyricists. The BLS reports that 3,130 writers fell into this category as of May 2013. Independent writers may work across multiple highly paid writing sectors, which can limit available jobs. For example, an author of a successful series of books may also write scripts for the movie versions of his books.

Cable and Subscription Programming

Cable and subscription programming also ranked high in terms of pay for writers, according to the BLS. The mean annual salary for writers in this sector was $88,010, while the mean hourly rate was $42.31. Jobs in this sector are in short supply with only 160 jobs reported. Independent writers and authors also work in this sector, which helps to explain the small number of jobs reported. Successful submission of scripts for television and movies usually requires writers to hire an agent who can introduce writers' work to potential clients.

Federal Government Executive Branch Writing Jobs

Writing jobs with the Executive branch of the federal government also pay well. As of May 2013, there were 1,190 jobs reported in this sector, which paid a mean annual salary of $86,910 and a mean hourly wage of $41.78. Writers employed by the U.S. government can expect to receive government benefits and full-time employment. Education and work experience requirements vary by job description and types of writing assigned. Security clearance and background investigations may also be required as a condition of working for the Executive branch of the government.
