Help Desk Job Salary

Help desk technicians are computer support professionals who respond to customers' inquiries when it comes to solving computer problems. Usually working with clients over the phone or via email, these specialists walk customers through fixing an issue step-by-step. Help desk helps clients with software and hardware installation, computer maintenance, Internet connection or any other local problem requiring a computer specialist. The average salary for a help desk job is $47,360, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure varies depending on the industry, state and even city of employment.

Average Salary Breakdown

Those help desk employees in the lowest 10 to 25 percent on average earn $27,200 to $34,320 annually. Specialists in the top 75 to 90 percent can expect to earn $57,290 to $72,690 a year. Those who find themselves between the bottom and the top on average make $44,300.

Salary by Industry

For the help desk technicians, the highest paid employers to work for include financial institutions, natural gas exploration and distribution enterprises, computer equipment manufacturers and, surprisingly, postal service. The salary range in these industries is $61,530 to $71,270.

However, help desk personnel is employed the most by schools, including colleges and high schools, enterprise management companies, computer design firms and equipment/supplies wholesalers. The average salary ranges anywhere from $43,310 to $52,470.

Salary by State

Connecticut, District of Columbia and Massachusetts pay the most. The salary ranges from $55,920 to $60,230. Massachusetts and District of Columbia are also in the top five of the states that have the most help desk technicians employed. Although Colorado, Idaho and Utah are in the top five by the number of employed as well, the salary range there is lower, anywhere from $40,160 to $51,790.

Salary by Metropolitan Area

Help desk employees living in large metropolises in California and Massachusetts, such as San Jose, California, San Francisco, California, Framingham, Massachusetts or Boston, Massachusetts, earn top dollar, ranging from $61,960 to $67,950. Framingham is also a metropolitan area with one of the highest concentration of these professionals. The rest of the cities with top number of employed help desk technicians pay significantly less, $36,140 to $47,120, on average.
