Health Planner Job Description

Public health planners compile information, statistics and analysis on health issues for specific populations or communities. Their findings affect how government agencies and health care institutions address problems such as obesity, contagious diseases and accidents.

Employment Types

Public health planners are often employed by the Department of Health at the state level. Other health planners work for local health departments, social service agencies and managed care organizations.

General Duties

Public health planners are usually responsible for integrating requirements and focus areas of different public health divisions and professionals, as well as for securing funding and resources through proposals and grant writing. They may also conduct studies and research projects on matters of public health, such as smoking.

Degree Levels

Public health planners are required to have a baccalaureate degree, but the area of study may vary. Some public health planners have a master's degree, typically in urban or regional planning or public health.

Job Scope and Specialties

Public health planners may develop advocacy programs for public health policies within the state and outside the local health department. Some areas of focus include policy research, strategic planning, health communication and training and primary care.

Other Considerations

Jobs that might be described as individual health planners usually fall under the categories of therapists or home care services. Public health planners deal with issues and trends that involve larger groups.

Wage Expectations

The Wisconsin Health Careers website provides a salary range of $25,000 to $69,000 per year for public health planners. Actual wages depend on the planner's education, experience and type of employment.
