Good Careers Requiring Artistic Skills

While the top earners in fields that call for artistic talent (i.e., hair stylists, architects) usually have years of experience in their respective industries, there are many who have the talent, ambition and patience to excel after only a short time working in artistic careers. Although many creative careers have been around for decades, technological innovations have made it necessary for workers to add computer skills and post-secondary education to their repertoire.

Photographer

With most work obtained through newspapers, magazines, portrait studio franchises, or personal studios, photographers usually earn higher wages if they are able to take on salaried positions. Freelance photographers often face difficulties in finding clientele; therefore, higher paid freelancers have assistants book clients for them. Because their work is more sporadic, unlike a salaried photographer, freelance photographers typically work for a variety of sources. Educational requirements for this profession include a college degree in photography or related field.

Research Chef/Food Innovation Chef

A research chef who works for popular food chains, for instance, is responsible for creating new food combinations for restaurants. The research chef often bases the new dishes on the purchasing habits of consumers, and the ingredients he/she chooses are based on the cost of mass-producing it. In fact, anytime your favorite national restaurant adds new items to its menu, odds are a research chef created it. The artistic skills required for this position primarily involve the senses of taste, smell, knowing how to prepare a wide array of cuisines, and use of marketing statistics to gauge what consumers enjoy. Depending on the employer, a degree in culinary arts is required. This can be obtained through any school that is accredited by the American Culinary Federation. Additional courses in food science and chemistry would also be helpful, due to the need to measure and accurately estimate the calorie counts and nutritional value of dishes created. Internships are extremely beneficial in providing well-rounded experience related to the culinary arts.

Home Stager

Often hired by real estate agents or homeowners who are selling property, professional home stagers are similar to interior decorators. How home stagers differ is that they do not usually paint or alter a home's physical attributes, but instead add a few decorative touches (i.e, dining room furniture, rugs, scented candles) to the interior before properties are shown to potential buyers. This is done in order to improve the home's appeal to potential buyers, without costing the seller as much as architectural improvements would require. Historically, a position filled by interior decorators or real estate agents, the job of a home stager often seals the deal for home buyers seeking a cozy spot to call home.

Toy Designer

Almost every popular childhood toy, with the exception of oddities like the Slinky (created by a Naval engineer), was invented/developed by a toy designer. When combined with an active imagination and knowledge of what features make up a good toy, designers keep toy stores filled and parents standing in line the day after Thanksgiving waiting for the next hot item. There are no educational requirements for this profession, but but a bachelor's degree in toy design or industrial design is usually preferred.
