Get a Job at a Fireworks Stand

Working at a fireworks stand can be a fun way to spend a summer. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the pay for seasonal jobs is typically low, but fireworks stands that are open year-round often have permanent, full-time positions with benefits such as health insurance and sick leave. If you live in an area with several fireworks stands, spend time at each of them and apply to the ones that feel like the best fit in terms of atmosphere, co-workers and management.

Visit fireworks stands and familiarize yourself with the products offered. Research the features and instructions for as many products as possible, along with safety precautions.

Prepare a resume that includes any experience you may have in retail work as well as fireworks. Include any special pyrotechnics knowledge you have in a section titled "Special Skills." Use a clear, readable font and ask a friend to proofread your resume for typos.

Bring your resume to the fireworks stand along with a list of three personal references with contact numbers. Ask to speak with the manager or owner. Let him know you're interested in working at the stand. If the stand is a temporary, seasonal business and has no current openings, ask for your resume to be kept on file.

Dress appropriately when you drop by the stand with your resume. A suit and tie is probably overdoing it, but a pair of clean, wrinkle-free khakis or skirt will let the owner or manager know you are professional and serious about working at the stand.

Smile and be friendly during your interview. Maintain eye contact with the hiring manager. During the interview, casually mention a few types of fireworks with which you're familiar. For example, you might discuss your experience with Roman candles or fountains. If you have retail experience, highlight that as well.

Ask questions during the interview. Don't spend all your time trying to sell yourself, says Ford R. Myers, author of "Get the Job You Want, Even When No One Is Hiring." Asking questions about the business --- for example, "What are your top-selling fireworks?" or "What is the most frustrating part about the job?" --- creates a casual, conversational tone for the interview and shows the hiring manager you are intelligent and inquisitive.

Send the hiring manager a thank-you note or e-mail no later than 24 hours after the interview. Express your appreciation to him for taking the time to interview you and that you look forward to speaking with him again. Emphasize your enthusiasm for the position and let him know when you'll be able to start should he choose to hire you.
