Find Your W-2 Forms From Your Old Job

If you’ve had more than one job in the past year, you should have received more than one W-2 form from employers. Used to calculate income tax, employers are required to send employees their personal W2s by Jan. 31 after the end of the year in which the work was performed. If your employer from your old job failed to send you a W2 or you have moved and think it may not have been properly delivered, there is a standard procedure to follow to obtain a copy for your tax records.

Call the employer from your old job and ask when they mailed your W2. Note that if your previous job was for a large corporation, you should speak to the Human Resources Department when you call.

Ask if the W2 was returned to them due to an incomplete or incorrect address.

Request that a duplicate W2 be mailed to you immediately; they should be more than willing to comply because they are required by law to deliver the information to you if at all possible. Ask them specifically when the W2 will go into the mail, and note this information.

Wait a reasonable amount of time for the copy of your W2 to arrive. Typically, this would be seven business days from the time mailed; the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states you should received duplicates no later than Feb. 16.

Contact the IRS if you have not received your W2 by Feb. 16. You will need to give them your name, Social Security number, address and phone number, as well as the employer's name and address and the dates you were employed there. They will also need an estimate of wages earned and federal taxes withheld; this information will be on your final pay stub from that company.

File your tax return by April 15, using the form 4852 and the estimated amounts that you gave to the IRS. This form is the substitute for form W2 and should be attached to your income tax forms in place of a W2; the IRS will verify the information before issuing any refund due to you.
