Ask for a Job in an Email

Asking for a job using email mandates both professional and technical attention to detail. Many employers scan and digitize resumes that job seekers submit via email and on paper. Over time the employer builds up a secure and searchable database of resumes, and you can only hope that you performed all of the right steps to get into this computerized hiring system. If you want to ask for a job in an email message, follow a few logical steps to make sure your personal request and supporting documentation do not go into a virtual black hole -- where nothing comes out.

Read the job description that is on the company's website or printed on the flyer. Find the details that state how the application reviewer wants to receive job inquiries by email. If the employer wants you to include both resume and cover letter, tailor these documents specifically to the expectations in the job description. Type these documents in a word processor application and save them to your computer's hard drive. Clearly name these documents similar to the following: "Accountant Resume -- [Your Name]" and "Accountant Cover Letter -- [Your Name]."

Launch your email client program on the PC (Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Microsoft Outlook). Click the "Compose" or "New" button, to begin creating the email message.

Type the hiring employer's email address in the "To" field. Type the position title for the job opening in the "Subject " field, like so: "Applying for the Accountant Level 1 Position." Most job descriptions specifically state what information the employer wants in the subject field, and this serves the very important technical purpose of sorting and filtering your email message to the right person and department. Your resume gets scanned into the searchable database based on these two fields as well.

Move down to the blank body of the email message and begin composing a "cover note" -- not to be confused with your cover letter. This one- to three-paragraph note explains to the receiving reader the following: who you are, how you learned about the position, and a brief explanation of your related qualifications and interest in the job. Use the same format as a standard business professional letter -- greeting, body and closing. At the very bottom of the email message, include the following statement: "Please see attached documents (2): Cover Letter and Resume." The number is simply a count of the attached documents.

Click the "Attach" button in your email client. Browse for your resume and cover letter on the hard drive. Upload and attach these documents to your email message.

Click the "Send" button to transmit the email message to the employer, regarding your interest in applying for a job. Wait for the employer to reply back to your email message, usually with a more official application and screening process.
