How Does a Boss Reward an Employee for a Job Well Done?

Verbal Recognition

There is nothing quite like being recognized by a superior at work for a job well done. For some employees, a verbal recognition from a boss is great because it not only confirms that the employee did something well, it demonstrates that the boss recognizes the efforts. Some bosses take this concept a step further and reward employees with verbal recognition in a public venue, such as during a staff meeting or in the middle of the workspace after getting everyone else's attention. Even though verbal recognition is not a tangible reward, it can encourage employees and increase morale. Not many employees like to toil without an occasional form of recognition, and in some cases a simple verbal recognition is sufficient and eagerly accepted.

Rewards and Monetary Compensation

It's nice to get verbal recognition from a boss for a job well done, but it's even better to get a little something extra for the effort. Bosses sometimes reward employee effort with monetary bonuses, extra paid time off or other perks like special parking spots or excused absence from tedious additional duties. These methods of recognition from bosses can be very motivating, especially for employees who respond well to tangible rewards. Bosses who have access to a liberal budget of available funds for rewarding employees should utilize these funds often when appropriate. Bosses may also be surprised to discover how motivating some paid time off can be for hard-working employees.

Additional Responsibilities

Although not all employees respond well to being assigned additional responsibilities as recognition, for some employees it can be a big motivator. Granting a hard-working employee a new title--but with no additional pay--may prove to boost morale and make the employee work even harder. Examples of this include dubbing someone a "senior representative" instead of simply a "representative." Even without a monetary raise that comes with the new title, employees may enjoy a perceived prestige.
