Job Description of a CSX Track Worker

Railroads are an integral part of the United States' transportation, manufacturing and energy infrastructure, but this continent-spanning system of rails has its own infrastructure that needs constant upkeep. At CSX Transportation, a U.S.-based railroad that operates in the eastern part of the country, there is a constant need to repair worn-out stretches of track and construct new ones to keep up with the volume of train traffic -- this upkeep work is the province of the track worker.

Responsibilities

Track workers at CSX perform manual labor related to the maintenance of railways and railroad tracks. These employees are expected to replace ties and bars, cut back brush obstructing the rail line, lubricate track switches to reduce the likelihood of derailments, cut rails and, generally, make sure rails are kept in good condition.

Qualifications

CSX prefers its track workers to have experience with working outside in fields such as construction, farming or operating heavy equipment. Track workers perform their jobs outside even in inclement weather, so it's important for them to have experience dealing with less-than-ideal conditions. Welding experience, for joining sections of track, and a commercial drivers' license, for hauling materials and equipment to and from work sites, are also pluses. The basic qualifications for the job, however, are a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license and being 18 years of age or older.

Conditions of Employment

Passing a background check is an initial condition of employment at CSX. Railroad work is a 24-hour business, so track workers must be prepared to work overtime and non-standard weeks. The company also requires its workers to wear protective equipment like steel-toed boots and hard hats, pass safety training and rules-related exams and submit to random drug and alcohol tests.

Seniority and Pay

Entry-level pay for CSX track workers is $19.37 an hour, and can go up to the full rate of $21.52 an hour. Like all CSX employees, track workers can change their specialty by applying to new jobs within the company, though this may entail sacrificing their seniority, which governs shift choices and choice of vacation days. The collective bargaining agreement stipulates that track workers can be considered for promotion as long as they're qualified.
