Job Description for a Teaching Assistant

Teacher's assistants are often employed by public (and sometimes private) school systems to allow the primary classroom teacher more time to actually plan and teach. The duties of teacher's assistants rely heavily on the direct need of the primary classroom teacher.

Work Environment

Many teacher's assistants work directly in the classroom for a portion of the day alongside a teacher. Most teaching assistants work only part time, but many can work full time and travel between several different classrooms throughout the day.

Duties

Teacher's assistants are often responsible for assisting children during small-group activities, photocopying worksheets, preparing centers and activities and grading.

Training

Many states only require teacher's assistants to have a high school diploma and on-the-job training. However, some states require that anyone and everyone working with children have some sort of post-secondary education.

Salary

As of May 2006, the median salary of a teacher's assistants was approximately $20,740 annually. However, the majority of teaching assistants only work part time and often have other jobs to obtain a full-time salary.

Employment Rates

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2006 that teaching assistant positions are expected to grow 10 percent between 2006 and 2016. During this time, approximately 136,000 new jobs will become available for teacher's assistants.
