Drafters use the calculations from engineers to develop the detailed plans for a construction. Junior drafters develop plans based on the initial drawings under the direction of the senior drafter.

Education

Employers require a drafter to have a high school education and additional training in a vocational or technical school. Computer courses in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) enhance the skills of the drafter. Drafters advance to the role of the senior drafter after gaining experience in the field. Specialty, geographic location and years of experience play a role in the salary of the senior drafter. For example, Tulsa, Okla., has the highest rates for senior drafters, with average hourly wages between $21.13 and $32, while the rate in Phoenix, Ariz., has average hourly rates between $16.66 and $24.57, according to PayScale.

Senior drafters in the oil and gas industry earn the highest wages, with hourly rates between $19.16 and $25.64 per hour. Those in the architectural industry earn an average rate between $18.36 and $24.27 per hour.

Drafters with 20 years of experience earn the highest salaries in the field, at rates of $20.18 to $27.60 per hour; those with less than one year of experience earn the lowest rates — between $15.71 and $19.28 per hour.
