Job Description of a Sales Counselor

A sales counselor is a sales representative who develops long-term relationships with customers that purchase products or services requiring large investments and lengthy decisions. Whether they're selling prefabricated homes, funeral plots or condos for seniors, sales counselors must understand the needs of buyers and help them make purchases that meet their budgets.

Primary Responsibilities

Sales counselors answer incoming calls from advertisements. They introduce the features and benefits of their products or services, using websites, brochures, follow-up emails and online and in-person presentations. They also research competitive products and create sales proposals and pricing options that meet the needs of their clients.

Education and Qualifications

When employers hire sales counselors, they're more interested in their selling experience (two years or more) and closing skills than any formal education, such as a bachelor's degree in business. Other important qualifications are strong values and character, and communication, negotiation, organization and problem-solving skills.

Salary and Job Outlook

Indeed reported average salaries of $40,000 for sales counselors in 2014. They may also earn commissions and bonuses for meeting or exceeding sales quotas. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an 11 percent increase in employment for real estate brokers and sales agents -- an average growth due mostly to population increases.
