Job Description for a Plumbing Dispatcher

Plumbing dispatchers make schedules and coordinate which plumbers go out to which job. Usually, plumbing dispatchers keep records and maintain logs for plumbing vehicles and equipment. When someone calls for a plumber on an emergency basis, the dispatcher will determine which plumber to send out.

Duties

Plumbing dispatchers are responsible for dispatching all the company's plumbers in a way that maximizes efficiency and ensures customer satisfaction. Some dispatchers may collect payments for performing other administrative duties as needed.

Education

Plumbing dispatcher positions usually require only a high school education. In addition, most plumbing dispatchers will learn the skills they need through on-the-job training.

Qualifications

Plumbing dispatchers should possess general computer literacy as well as an ability to learn whatever telephone system the company uses. Plumbing dispatchers should pay close attention to details, as data entry may fall within their responsibilities. Finally, plumbing dispatchers should have good customer service skills.

Outlook

The Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment for all non-police, fire department, and ambulance dispatchers will decline slowly. It also suggests that opportunities in dispatching may open up for individuals with computer skills as the equipment dispatchers use becomes increasingly more technological.

Earnings

As of 2008, plumbing dispatchers earned a median annual wage of $33,850.
