Job Description of an Office Manager in an Automotive Store

An office manager in an automotive store needs flexibility to adapt to that industry's software and terminology, but otherwise the office management job skills needed are the same as in other retail environments. Usually some prior experience using office software products, such as Microsoft Office, is required. Other helpful attributes include good organizational and interpersonal skills. The primary job duties of an automotive store office manager involve payroll, billing, deposits and collections.

Educational Requirements

There are no specific educational requirements for office managers of an automotive store. However, some employers may require that an applicant have an associate or bachelor's degree. For this position, administrative experience may be more important than formal education.

Experience

Three to five years of relevant administrative experience may be required to work as an automotive store office manager. Prior bookkeeping experience and knowledge of computer applications is essential. You should be comfortable working in team environments as well as independently. Other skills helpful to this position include being able to multitask and communicate effectively as well as being highly organized and flexible.

Job Duties

You might supervise other office staff, depending on the size of the automotive store. The main duties involve reconciling bank accounts and differences, making journal entries for accounts payable and receivable, preparing payroll and taxes, preparing and correcting accounting data and developing budgets. If the automotive store is ever short-staffed, you may be asked to temporarily fill in as a cashier.

Office managers of automotive stores earn average salaries of $29,000 to $46,000 per year, depending on their level of education and experience as well as the area of the country in which they work. Some of these managers also enjoy health and dental insurance.

Working Conditions

Office managers of automotive stores generally work a 40-45 hour workweek. You may receive overtime compensation if you work more than 40 hours in a week. You may also work with the store manager to make sure you are covering weekends when he or she is not working. Expect to do most of your work inside an office within the store, behind a desk, with a computer and a phone.
