Job Description for an Immigration Officer

Benefit fraud occurs when an illegal immigrant creates or purchases fraudulent documentation relating to permanent residency and citizenship and is a growing problem due to increasing numbers of illegal immigrants entering the United States. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Office is focused upon eliminating benefit fraud throughout the United States, and to that end, hires immigration officers to work in the field on this important issue.

Identification

Immigration officers are responsible for identifying and investigating instances of benefit fraud in order to uncover those responsible for creating the falsified documents as well as those who are using them.

Cooperation

As they conduct investigations, immigration officers enlist the help of local and federal law enforcement. They work as an intermediary between all agencies involved, encouraging collaboration and cooperation.

Interviews

During the course of an investigation, immigration officers conduct interviews of witnesses, suspects and other people who may have information about the case of benefit fraud.

Consultation

In addition to investigative duties, immigration officers also assist law and regulation makers in the fields of legislation and public policy in reviewing and establishing policies regarding benefit fraud and illegal immigrants.

Reports

Immigration officers write reports detailing the progress and outcome of their investigations. In addition, they make written recommendations to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Office on future developments or proceedings relating to the reduction of benefit fraud.
