Job Description for a Design Consultant

Becoming a design consultant means staying current with design and color trends, contributing ideas to the team’s portfolio, helping to provide excellent customer service, recruiting new design consultants and assisting customers with ordering questions.

Tasks and Duties

Tasks to be performed as a design consultant include educating customers about the company’s finance options, participating in corporate-sponsored marketing and training programs, utilizing corporate systems and technology to get the most out of designing projects and effectively demonstrate catalogues and products to customers.

Qualifications

Most design consultants are required to hold at least an associate’s degree in practical interior design. However, some employers will want someone with a bachelor’s degree. Also, employers may seek professional experience as a design consultant.

Skills and Abilities

Design consultants should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, organizational skills, interpersonal skills and should have the ability to design and create projects using creative skills as well as technical skills.

Salary

Design consultants can make between $19,890 and $43,214, as of 2010. However, the average salary of a design consultant is $34,004 a year. Salaries normally vary depending on the size of the company, the industry, professional experience and educational experience.

Work Environment

Most design consultants work in an office environment. Some design consultants travel for work. Noise levels tend to vary depending on the size of the company.
