Job Description for a Customs Clerk

When companies and corporations engage in trade with foreign countries, the exchanged goods pass through customs to ensure they are legal and authorized. A customs clerk facilitates these procedures. According to Payscale, in July 2010 a U.S. customs clerk earned $24,884 to $33,678 annually.

Job Duties

A customs clerk prepares documents and reviews them for accuracy and completeness. She confirms all aspects of the documents to ensure their expedient delivery. If questions or problems arise, she contacts the appropriate authorities to address and resolve them.

Skill Requirements

Since each country has different rules and regulations regarding exports and imports, a customs clerk has to be well versed in a myriad of international rules and regulations. His attention to detail has to be exemplary, as well as his negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

Preferred Background

Formal education in international trade relations and knowledge of foreign languages is often required to obtain a position as a customs clerk. Experience in customs brokerage or import/export operations is a plus for aspiring customs clerks.
