Job Description of a Cage Cashier

Cage cashiers, also referred to as gaming cage workers, interact directly with casino patrons and other casino workers to provide currency and casino token exchange services. Casinos normally require that gaming cage workers hold at least a high school diploma when applying for a cage cashier position. Approximately 16,900 gaming cage cashiers worked in the United States in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Training/Licensing

Casinos provide on-the-job training, which educates workers about the casino’s policies and any applicable gaming regulations that pertain to a cage cashier position. New employees learn how to handle money and process gaming vouchers from electronic gambling machines and chip winnings from table games like poker and roulette. Each individual state enforces requirements for gaming cage workers that can include minimum age limits, state residency requirements and background checks. A cage cashier must satisfy all state requirements before the state gaming commission will grant him a license.

Working Conditions

Cage cashiers may have a varying schedule that can include nights, weekends and holidays because casinos are open year round and need to staff workers during the hours the casino is open to exchange vouchers and chips for cash. A gaming cage worker normally stands during the length of his shift and may be exposed to tobacco smoke when working, depending on the casino’s smoking policies. Gaming cage workers have access to calculators and adding machines to calculate complicated financial transactions.

Duties

In addition to cashing out a casino patron’s winnings, a gaming cage worker must also complete IRS paperwork if the patron’s winnings exceed a predetermined amount. Gaming cage cashiers may also conduct credit checks on patrons who request a gambling credit line through the casino. Cage cashiers may also accept cash from a casino patron in exchange for casino chips or provide cash for other casino workers who walk around the casino acting as mobile cashiers.

Advancement Opportunities

A cage cashier seeking casino advancement opportunities must first excel at his job, ensuring that his cash drawer does not contain any discrepancies and that he provides excellent customer service for casino patrons. Advancement opportunities in the gaming cage cashier profession include head cashier and supervisory cashier.

Salary/Career Outlook

As of 2013, a gaming cage worker employed in the United States could expect to make a yearly salary of $26,190 and an hourly pay rate of $12.59, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Cage cashiers employed in Nevada earned slightly higher wages with a mean yearly salary of $30,370 and a mean hourly wage of $14.60. According to O*NET OnLine, job opportunities for gaming cage workers are expected to grow 3 to 7 percent between 2012 and 2022, slower than average job growth.
