Job Description of a Billing Assistant

A billing assistant is responsible for creating and sending invoices to clients for payment and researching disputed invoices. Under the supervision of the billing manager, this position requires an individual who has the ability to work independently, is able to work under pressure, is analytical and has excellent problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

Requirements for this position include a high school diploma, two to three years experience working in billing and prior knowledge of Microsoft Office, primarily Word and Excel.

Skills may include exceptional customer service, strong verbal and written skills, basic math and accounting software skills, good quality of research abilities, superb knowledge of acquiring financial concepts, good bookkeeping experience, superior organizational skills, punctuality and advanced multi-tasking.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of a billing assistant include processing, tracking and completing third-party invoices, issuing billing adjustments, printing, validating and mailing customer refund checks, processing delinquent invoices, maintaining daily logs of all transactions, contacting customers regarding payment inquiries, performing data entry onto company's software, carrying out daily closing, and balancing of payments and receipts.

Work Environment

For a billing assistant, the day may consist of sitting in front of a computer and processing financial information for customers' payments. The position can be quite stressful, especially with processing multiple payments in a timely manner, balancing financial totals and receipts, handling past due invoices and endorsements, and interacting and solving customers' issues.

Job Outlook

Although the employment growth of billing assistants is slower than most occupations on the job market through 2016. According to Career Planner,between 2006 to 2016, employment in this field will go up to 4 percent. Despite the slow growth, the job prospects should be good, considering that workers in this profession are advancing to other positions. One area that always in need of billing assistants is the health care industry, mainly because the health care field is constantly growing.

Salary

Salary for billing assistants may be in the low margin compared to most accounting positions. Based on information obtained through the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for this position is at $32,900 for 2009. For individuals who are at the 50 percent median, the salary could be at $31,720. For entry-level positions, or in the lower 10 percent, salary will start roughly at $22,020, and individuals who have been in their position for several years can make up to $45,970.
